Green accounts

A common model for the Green accounts is one of four focal points of the Life project. It is a tool that the municipalities may use to visualise the state of the environment, environmental impacts and environmental efforts. Such visualisation may, for example, show the results of the municipal efforts in the environmental field, or it may be used as a basis for benchmarking.

In the model for the Green accounts eight to ten areas will be identified, describing a sustainable municipality, both as an enterprise and as a geographic unit. To each area is attached a benchmark/vision that the municipality should seek to attain, and for each benchmark one or more indicators with calculation method will be set up.

The basis for the work with indicators is the experience already gained in the five Dogme municipalities, in the work under Nordic Cities’ Environmental Indicators and European Common Indicators.

Designation of areas and development of preliminary indicators will take place in 2005. Development of calculation methods for the indicators will take place in 2005/2006. The model and the indicators have been tested in 2006 and will be published in 2007 in the green accounts for each municipalty.
