Activities carried out in the Dogma municipalities

In the Dogma municipalities, many initiatives have been taken over the years to limit the chemicals consumption, to survey the extent of the problem, and to dispose of existing chemicals in a correct manner. The efforts in the municipalities may be divided into activities directed at the enterprises, the citizens and the municipality itself, but also cross-cutting activities are included in the experience and knowledge gathering.

Enterprise-oriented activities

Activities directed as the enterprises consist of a mixture of control and motivation into voluntary efforts. In all five municipalities, focus is on chemicals during supervisory work at enterprises; cleaner technology, environmental management, wastewater problems and suitable storage of chemical substances are discussed. This means that the dialogue focuses on storage, management and emission of chemicals. The municipalities organise courses, participate at festivals, and prepare information materials on a wide range of issues.

Citizen-oriented activities

Activities directed at the citizens consist, for example, of organisation of ”green days”, campaigns to avoid pesticides in the gardens, pamphlets on hazardous waste, waste separation, cleaning, washing, personal hygiene etc.

Activities oriented at the municipality itself

Examples of activities where the municipality is in focus are preparation of environmental measures during building and construction works, including management of hazardous chemicals. The Dogma municipalities have introduced an eco-friendly purchasing policy with a target of reducing the use of problematic substances, phasing out hazardous substances and using organic food. Environmental certification of municipal institutions is also in focus.
