Green Accounts – Presentation

A status on the work on indicators in the green account model was presented by Jesper Thomsen from the project group green accounts. Jesper Thomsen opened the meeting with a review of the progress in the work on Green Account indicators.

Furthermore Mr. Thomsen focused on areas wherein Neumünster and Siauliai could play a role in the testing of indicators. It has not yet been not decided which indicators will be selected. But Neumünster and Siauliai should contribute as described below:

Neumünster:

  • Air Pollution, indicators describing the pollution of particles generated by motorized traffic.
  • Energy, indicators describing energy consumption and CO2 emissions, percentage of energy  generated from renewable energy sources.

Siauliai:

  • Nature, indicators describing biodiversity and the area of nature.
  • Soil and Groundwater, indicators describing extraction of groundwater and quality of groundwater

Summary of the workshop discussions

Neumünster
On nature, indicators of biodiversity and the size of (amount of/area of?) nature(green-)  areas(-plantation?):

In connection with the Agenda 21 reporting Neumünster has chosen trees in the city as indicator of air pollution.  It is deemed possible that these trees (amount or health?) can contribute to an estimate of the amount of nature in the city as well. In Neumünster very old trees are listed in a separate register and the trees are protected by law. Neumünster will pass on written information.

About air Pollution, indicators on the pollution by particles from traffic.

On Air Pollution, indicators of particle pollution generated by motorized traffic
Neumünster has chosen the concentration of NOx as indicator of air pollution. The Green Accounts Group is responsible for obtaining data from Neumünster.

About energy, indicators on energy consumption and CO2 emissions, percentage of use of alternative energy sources:

On Energy, indicators of energy consumption and CO2 emission, percentage of energy delivered by renewable sources. Neumünster has data of the region, but no data concerning the city alone.

Silauliai
About nature, indicators on biodiversity and the size of nature areas:
On nature, indicators of biodiversity and the size of (amount of?) nature (green?)  areas:

Silauliai has summarized data of green plantation etc. stating ha and percentage of the area of the municipality. This record was made in 2002 and divides green plantation in discrete sub groups. Further more, the record lists rare species of animals in parks and woods as an indicator of biodiversity.

The registration was done by the University and will not be made every year. It is not yet decided when the next assessment will be carried out.

About earth and Groundwater, indicators on extraction of groundwater and quality of groundwater:

For some year Silauliai has continually been assessing and logging the extraction and quality of ground water. There are 22 points of measurement and in each point several parameters are analysed e.g. NO3, SO2 and pesticides. Surveys are done every year.

On air Pollution, indicators on the pollution by particles from traffic:
No data is available. The Government administration has a monitoring station in Silauliaia, measuring particles in air – PM10.

Conclusions:
It was agreed to continue the development of these indicators:

Area of green plantation

Assessment of biodiversity in selected areas

Quantity and quality of extracted groundwater

Change in air quality measured as content of NOx and PM10

The project team of Green Accounts holds the initiative.
